Tablets, Tablets and more Tablets

I was amused by the number of Tablet PCs or Tablet Computers coming out in the market and thought that it required a mention in my blog.

According to the wikipedia definition, "A tablet PC is a laptop PC equipped with a stylus or a touch screen. This form factor (a form factor specifies the physical dimensions of a major system components) is intended to offer a more mobile PC. Tablet PCs may be used where notebooks are impractical or unwieldy, or do not provide needed functionality."

The term tablet PC was made popular by Mircrosoft, where it was defined as a pen-enabled computer conforming to hardware specifications devised by Microsoft.
"A tablet computer or simply a tablet is defined as a complete computer contained entirely in a flat touch screen that uses a stylus, a digital pen, or finger tip as the primary input device instead of a key board or a mouse which may or may not be included".

The Tablet PCs are the hottest commodity in town and are grabbing headlines everywhere. There are a number of established players like Microsoft and Apple that have launched Tablet PCs and there are lesser known ones, even from Hyderabad hitting the markets soon. A quick look at some of them:

Microsoft Tablet PC:





Runs operating system based on Windows XP professional, offers advanced handwriting and speech recognition features that let you create, store and transmit handwritten notes and voice input.

Apple iPad Tablet PC:

Apple's iPad, the best way to see the web, email and photos. With its multi-touch screen and its ability to run thousands of apps, iPad can do thousands of things a tablet PC or e-reader can't.

Headed by Nicholas Negroponte, OLPC is a non-profit organization set up to oversee the creation of an affordable educational device for the developing world.


OLPC Xo-1 is mainly targeted for children in the developing countries.

After looking at all the tablets available in the market, one really has to wonder - what do they really cure apart from your curiosity!!!

Apple iPhone 3G India Launch

The much hyped Apple's iPhone 3G is set to launch in India on 22nd August, 2008 - a few days more for all those waiting with bated breadth for its India debut. With its huge fan following and record sales across the world, the iPhone has already captivated many a eye with its rollicking features and eye-catching apps.

In India, iPhone will be offered through service providers - Airtel and Vodafone. The price for the Indian market is expected to be around 20,000 to 30,000 INR. The iPhone is slated to be a 3-in-1 device - a revolutionary phone, a widescreen iPod, and a breakthrough Internet device (including email, web browsing and Wifi connectivity).

The iPhone will be available in 8 GB and 16 GB variants in India. Although the iPhone supports 3G speeds (upto 14.4 Mbps), the networks themselves are not equipped in India to provide faster rates. The iPhone users in India will have to be content with 2G networks. Added to that, all features may not be supported in the Indian version of the iPhone.
